Trip to the Newport Ship - this trip is now full! An opportunity to travel to the Newport Ship display in Newport with transport organised by coach. You will be guided in small groups of about 14 and guided by volunteers from the Friends of Newport Ship to learn about the vessel's design and construction, its activities and ultimate demise in Newport. See images of its discovery, recovery and ongoing restoration project. The volunteer tour guides will start each group at a different section (so there may be a certain amount of noise cross-contamination). This will also mean some people will not receive the info in chronological order. It is primarily display boards with images / drawings / photos of the excavation, timber treatment, artists' impressions of the ship, etc and some text. There are self-guide headphone sets if people prefer.
There are foldaway chairs which people are welcome to use at any time during the visit.
For those who attended the talk by Toby Jones in January, this will provide a perfect opportunity to ask more in depth questions and view the timbers themselves in their humidity-controlled storeroom. The tour will end with the volunteers brewing up some tea and coffee and there will be time to visit the small gift shop. Seating is available. Please note that the venue is not heated so dress accordingly. Access has a slight ramp (no steps) but be advised that the toilets are not suitable for wheelchair users. The cost for coach transport will depend on the number attending but is anticipated to be between £7 and £12. The Newport Ship charity does not charge an entry fee but donations would be welcome. Approximate timing: 9.30 departure from Monmouth 10.30 to 12.30 at the Ship 1.30 arrival back in Monmouth
