Discovered, disassembled and raised in 2002-3, the hull remains and artefacts of the Newport Medieval Ship have progressed through cleaning, documentation, analysis and conservation treatment. The ship, which dates to the 1450s/1460s, was built with timbers harvested from the hinterlands of the Basque Country. Artefactual and environmental evidence suggests operational links with Portugal.
Recovery of such a unique find provides rare insights into the technological innovations that accompanied the Age of Exploration and the complexity and scale of Anglo-Iberian trading links. Efforts are now focused on the reassembly and display of this maritime treasure.
