Filton in Space
Terry Ransome

Terry started work with British Aerospace, Bristol in 1970 and specifically in the Space division. He worked ‘in space’ for 35 years and is still active as a volunteer at the Aerospace Bristol Museum, ‘putting the Space into Aerospace’.

During his working years he worked on the Assembly, Test and Launch of several spacecraft projects including a Skylark sounding rocket launched from Woomera, South Australia, the GEOS magnetospheric research satellite launched from Cape Canaveral, and Beagle 2, the UK Mars Lander launched from Baikonur, Kazakhstan in 2003, that made a successful landing on the planet (but never, unfortunately, sent any data back!).

His talk will give an overview of over 60 satellites launched with hardware from Filton, Bristol aboard, before concentrating on Giotto, the Bristol-built spacecraft that flew to Halley’s Comet – and took the first ever close-up of a cometary nucleus. And the talk takes place just 5 days after the 40th anniversary of flyby on 13th/14th March 1986!
