Earthquakes – Alan Gray
Alan Gray

Earthquakes cause extensive damage and injury to people. Most take place in regions where
earthquakes have occurred before, mostly in subduction zones such as the “Ring of Fire” around the
Pacific Ocean. Whilst all attempts at forecasting them have failed, so far, it is hoped that
understanding how earthquakes happen and what their effects are will solve this very complicated
problem, saving lives and property. The talk covers some examples from which important insights
into the mechanisms of earthquakes have been revealed.
