This is a programme lasting a minimum of a year to encourage wider involvement in the community and in developing oneself personally. It is based upon the Duke of Edinburgh’s award for young people, but allows more flexibility. Participants set themselves targets in four different areas:
- Volunteer – undertaking something for the benefit of the community either as a substantial project or on a regular basis.
- Independent Expedition – taking a trip that goes beyond normal experience. It might be outdoors, but it could equally be a trip abroad planned and booked independently offering a degree of challenge.
- Skills – learning a new skill or engaging in some educational activity.
- Activity – doing something physical to maintain or improve fitness
