Dave Richards, a local retired geologist, talked about where his career in geology has taken him. As he has written – You might call this talk “Always a geologist” because that is how it feels, even when your work or life takes you far from the formal application of geology as a science.
Maybe it was a specimen of haematite found in a garden near Eskdale in the Lake District around 60 years ago that turned out to be the foundation stone of Dave Richards’ life as a geologist. His uncle found it while gardening and gave it to his nine year-old nephew. Dave worked out that this sample had probably been moved some miles by a glacial lateral moraine from a deposit which later became an iron mine.
